Mission

by admin last modified 2007-02-12 19:13

We are a volunteer-based non profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation and release of Hawaii's orphaned and injured wild birds.

Our mission is to establish a wild bird rehabilitation center on Oahu for all wild birds in need of help.

Our goal is to release the birds after they have recuperated from an illness or injury. Those birds, however, that have sustained injuries that prevent them from surviving in the wild will be adopted out to a certified care giver or given a permanent safe home at the center.

We believe all wild birds deserve our utmost respect and compassion. We believe they deserve a safe haven where they can recover, heal, and receive a renewed chance for life.

Trained volunteer members are currently working in their own homes with many species of injured and baby birds, using specialized diets and techniques to facilitate their recovery and success when restored to their natural habitat.

We assess injuries, treat shock and dehydration, splint broken bones, administer medications, treat a variety of wounds, perform physical therapy, feed hungry babies, and provide supportive care to all the birds we receive.

We have exceptionally skilled rehabilitators on call for consultation. We also rely on avian veterinarians for expert advice and surgical and technical procedures.

We receive hundreds of wild birds every year, and the number of referrals continues to grow. Our volunteer rehabbers support the birds with their own time and resources, often spending several hours a day and hundreds of dollars a month to care for these innocent and vulnerable wild creatures.

It is a privilege and a joy to be able to serve the community and save our birds. At the same time, the sheer number in need of care can be overwhelming and we have had to turn some away.

We would like to invite you to participate in the creation of a wild bird rehabilitation center where the public can learn more about Hawaii's birds and where all birds in need can receive the help they deserve.
